Institute of Public Health of
Vojvodina
The
Institute for Public Health of Vojvodina
is one of the leading institutions in the region that deals with
numerous activities related to preventive measures, with the
special emphasis placed on the function of this institution
within the health care system.
The beginning of work of the present Institute is connected with
the establishment of the Permanent Bacteriological Station in
Novi Sad in 1920, and its first director was Dr Petar
Svarc. The Institute got the name of the Public Institute
for Hygiene in 1927. In 1931, it got the
sanitary-technical and social-medical departments. As time went
by, the favourable conditions were created for development of
bacteriological laboratory and diagnostic methods for detection
of causes of many infectious diseases, which enabled the work in
containing diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, trachoma,
diphtheria, anthrax, rabies and veneric diseases. At the
beginning of 1945, the Institute became the
Sanitary-Epidemiological Institute and in 1952, its
name was changed to the Institute for Public Hygiene of the
AP Vojvodina.
The Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad was founded in 1960
and the Institute became the educational basis for subjects
related to preventive medicine. In 1963, the Institute
got the name of the Institute for Health Care Protection
and in 1967, it moved to a new building with 4,500 m2
of surface that it still occupies. An important link in its
development chain was given to it in 1965, with the
establishment of the Virusology and Immunology Department
and in 1968 with the establishment of the Department
for Education in Health Care.
In
November 1977, together with 16 other clinics and
institutes, it became an integral part of the Faculty of
Medicine in Novi Sad. After a new organisation within the
Faculty that was carried out in May 1991, the Institute
became the Provincial Institute for Public Health. On
September 11th, 1993, the Institute was given a
new name – the Institute for Public Health of Novi Sad,
and on May 22nd, 2007, it got its present name
– the Institute for Public Health of Vojvodina. All until
the passing of the latest and currently valid Law on Health Care
Protection System in 1992, the Institute had been the
institution of regional significance for 40 years. Since then,
the Institute has not had the access to data on health status
and health protection of population in Vojvodina, which it has
been collecting for decades before that.
